Even the turbo + exhaust manifold from a 1.9 turbo diesel will fit. 1.6 turbos are generally bigger (MUCH bigger than any TDI turbo), with no maximum boost until around 3,000 RPM. The 1.9 TD turbos are smaller and although it may be a better choice for daily driving, it will cause higher EGT due to extra backpressure from the smaller turbine.
What you do is install the cam and hub, turn the cam CW and pin it with the cam indexing tool. After that, you turn the crank CW and pin it with the crank tool. And finally, install the T/B following the install part of the T/B procedure. Same way with the non advanced method.
